No. Native Local is the recommended default and runs semantic matching locally in your browser with no API key. If you want to use cloud AI instead, open Settings, switch to External AI, choose Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, or OpenAI, then add your own key. See the full walkthrough.
The first local scan may need to download the semantic model. Your browser caches it, so later scans can start much faster. Review analysis itself stays on your device in Native Local mode.
My Flags is free — you tell BookGlints what to look for (a trope, a content warning, anything in your own words) and it finds matching reviews. Auto-Scan is a one-time $9.99 unlock — no flags needed, it finds recurring themes and patterns for you. Both work with Native Local or External AI. More in the Guide.
Open Settings → Auto-Scan Unlock → paste the key into the License key field → Save. You'll see "✓ Verified" once it's confirmed. Lost your key? Email support@bookglints.com with your purchase confirmation.
Open the extension's Settings page (right-click the BookGlints icon → Options, or use the Settings link in the popup). Add one flag per line — anything from a specific trope to a general vibe you want to avoid. For tips on writing good flags, see the Guide.
Make sure you're on a supported Goodreads, StoryGraph, or Royal Road book/fiction page. If it still doesn't work, refresh the page before opening the extension, or use Find Another Book in the popup to search by title instead.

BookGlints stores extension settings, flags, scan history, local caches, and any optional External AI key in your browser. In Native Local mode, review analysis stays on your device. In External AI mode, scan content is sent directly from your browser to the provider you selected; it does not pass through a BookGlints server. See the Privacy Policy for details.
BookGlints needs access to those three supported sites so it can collect book and review text when you use its scanning features. The extension does not request general browsing-history access and does not run on unrelated websites. In Native Local mode, review analysis stays in your browser; External AI access is optional and requested only when you choose a provider. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
