These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of BookGlints (the "Service"), a browser extension and associated web services operated by BookGlints ("we," "us," or "our"). By installing or using BookGlints, you agree to these Terms.
BookGlints is a browser extension that scans publicly available book reviews on Goodreads, StoryGraph, and Royal Road to identify themes and user-defined things readers want to find or avoid. By default, BookGlints can perform semantic analysis locally in the browser using Native Local AI, with no API key required. Users may optionally switch to External AI using their own Google Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, or OpenAI API key. When External AI is used, relevant scan content is sent directly from the user's browser to the selected provider and does not pass through a BookGlints server. The Service helps readers make informed decisions before purchasing or reading books.
You must be at least 13 years old to use BookGlints. By using the Service, you represent that you meet this requirement.
You agree to use BookGlints only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You must not:
BookGlints and all associated content, features, and functionality are owned by BookGlints and are protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works based on the Service without our express written permission.
BookGlints accesses publicly available content from Goodreads, StoryGraph, and Royal Road. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Goodreads, StoryGraph, Royal Road, Amazon, or any other third-party service. Use of those platforms is subject to their own terms of service.
Native Local does not require an external AI API key. To provide local semantic analysis, your browser may download machine-learning model files from third-party model-hosting infrastructure. Those downloads are model data only; BookGlints does not send your review text or flags to the model host for analysis.
If you choose External AI, you supply your own API key from Google Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, or OpenAI. Your use of that provider — including pricing, rate limits, model behavior, and data handling — is governed by your agreement with that provider, not by BookGlints. We recommend reviewing the provider's terms and privacy policy.
The one-time Auto-Scan unlock is processed by Paddle.com, acting as merchant of record. By making a purchase, you also agree to Paddle's terms of service and privacy policy.
BookGlints is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that results obtained from using the Service will be accurate or reliable. Automated semantic analysis and any optional External AI output may contain errors or omissions.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, BookGlints shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the Service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes via email or through the Service. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with applicable international law. Any disputes shall be resolved through binding arbitration or in a court of competent jurisdiction.

This Privacy Policy describes how BookGlints ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you use our browser extension and associated services.
BookGlints has no user accounts and does not operate a backend that receives your review text. We collect very little:
The extension requests access only to the supported book sites needed for scanning: Goodreads, StoryGraph, and Royal Road. It also uses browser storage for settings and history, notifications for completed background scans, and an offscreen extension document for Native Local processing. External AI provider access is optional and is requested only when you choose to use that provider.
Because so little ever reaches us, there is very little to use. What we do use is limited to:
Native Local — recommended default: Semantic review analysis runs locally in your browser. Review text and your flags are not sent to an external AI provider for analysis. The first local scan may download machine-learning model files from third-party model-hosting infrastructure; those requests are for model data, not your review text or flags.
External AI — optional: If you explicitly switch to External AI, relevant review text, your flags, and other scan input are sent directly from your browser to the provider you selected using your own API key. BookGlints does not proxy that content through our servers. The provider's handling of that data is governed by its own terms and privacy policy:
External AI is not required to use BookGlints. If you use it, review your chosen provider's current terms because pricing, retention, and model-training policies can vary by provider and plan.
We do not sell your personal information. The limited third-party data flows are:
Extension settings, flags, scan history, local caches, and any optional External AI key are stored locally in your browser until you clear them, reset the extension, or uninstall it. Browser-managed caches may also follow your browser's own retention rules. A license key (if you've purchased Auto-Scan) is retained by our license-verification service so the unlock can continue to be validated after reinstalling or switching devices.
Most BookGlints data is under your direct control in the browser. You can change or clear extension settings and history, remove an optional API key, or uninstall the extension. We implement reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the limited information we do handle. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure.
BookGlints is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the Service or on this page.

We want you to be satisfied with BookGlints. This Refund Policy explains when and how refunds are available.
BookGlints' core extension is free. The only purchase is a one-time $9.99 unlock for Auto-Scan. If you're not satisfied, you may request a full refund within 14 days of purchase, no questions asked. After 14 days, purchases are non-refundable.

We aim to process all refund requests within 3 business days. Refunds are issued to your original payment method via Paddle. Once a refund is processed, your license key is deactivated and Auto-Scan will stop working.
We reserve the right to decline refund requests where we have evidence of abuse, fraud, or violation of our Terms of Service — for example, requesting a refund and then continuing to use a license key obtained through other means.
